Coming up with specific scenarios in which I have experienced significant learning is actually harder than I anticipated, even though there have been countless instances.
I suppose traveling to Belize was rather significant, and it was incredibly fun, and I learned quite a lot. Likewise, the whale watching trip from earlier that same year. Getting to do something awesome generally promotes significant (and successful) learning, because everyone who’s doing the learning is engaged and happy to learn.
But, because the school system doesn’t really allow for much of this “doing awesome stuff,” most significant learning takes place outside the school. (Also, because I was homeschooled the majority of my life, it’s really statistically likely that most of my significant learning took place outside of a school.)
I’ve always been happy to learn new things and gather new information about particular subjects, but when I learn Significantly, it’s because I’m really interested in what I’m learning about.
Other common themes of general significant learning include being with a group of trusted friends, which is absolutely true. Most of the times I’m really passionate about something (or begin to be really passionate about it) is when I’m learning with or from one of my friends.
I also think that when you remember something, no matter what on earth it is, it’s an instance of significant learning. If you remember something weird from Kindergarten, it’s probably because you learned something at that instance, be it a life lesson, or someone’s fright of bees.
